Presentation abstract: An Overview of EU Projects and the Role of Partnership Building. EU projects are structured as a collaboration between a group of partners who share tasks and responsibilities. This means that finding the right partners and setting up the collaboration or consortium is a key preparatory task. Partners need to be complementary to each other, but they must share an interest in the common problem that they are going to tackle in their research. Moreover, the consortium has to establish management structures and procedures adapted to the type and the complexity of the project. This will also be an important criterion in the evaluation of proposals. What is a good consortium? How to organise it? Where to find it? The presentation will address one of the core issues at stake in the fund sourcing, i.e. the building of a successful consortium.
*Oronzo Daloiso studied at King’s College London (Bachelor of Arts Honours in European Studies), the Institut d’Etudes Politiques-Sciences Po Paris, the London School of Economics and the Italian Society for International Organisation. He previously worked at the Parliament of the Province of Buenos Aires, the European Parliament and the Joseph Károlyi Foundation in Budapest. After a Master’s degree in Diplomacy, he specialised in EU Affairs and Projects, and is now Project Officer at Paragon Europe, Maltese organisation focused on research, innovation and dissemination. He is responsible for the Project Department in the Brussels office and is in charge of liaising with the project partners.
Programme Report
Last 3rd of June 2013, the European Professionals Network (EPN) organised a seminar in cooperation with Paragon Europe, a Maltese company providing expertise on a variety of economy tools and business services. Above all, following Malta’s admission to the European Union in May 2004, Paragon Europe has been successful in sourcing funds for EU projects submitted under a number of programmes, such as The Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP6) and Leonardo da Vinci.
This is one of the reasons why, EPN invited Oronzo Daloiso to hold the seminar “An Overview of EU Projects and the Role of Partnership Building”. The seminar intended to give an idea on:
- how funding opportunities within the EU can be identified
- how EU funding programmes are structured
- what an application writing implies
- how a solid consortium can be built by looking for partners
The attention of the participants was significantly attracted by an accurate power point presentation, outlining the steps one needs to know in ordered to be awarded grants and the essential criterion to be followed for a successful development of a project plan, starting from the priorities and the obligations to the action plan.
After having accurately described the initiation phase of the project, the work packages, the budget evaluation and how the European Commission usually evaluates the submitted projects; the speaker also gave an extensive insight on the partner search phase, vital and preliminary to all other phases.
Whilst the first part of the seminar was notional, the second part was more practical and based on actual exercises. The participants were brought together in groups of three and they had to try to define the profile of their own organisations, network between them in order to identify the expertise useful to the creation of a partnership and once the partnership found, they had to plan activities and foresee positive results.
The 20 participants assisting the seminar were actively involved in asking questions and took great part in the exercises. EPN was glad to host a high-qualified professional like Mr. Daloiso and thankful for his extraordinary ability to engage the participants while also paying great attention to point views and details.
